Alabama Business Personal Property tax filing

Mobile and Baldwin counties already require e-file. Tuscaloosa joins them for 2026 under Act 2026-311.

Q4 2026 Rendax launches Alabama support for the season openingOctober 1, 2026. Hear when it opens.

Which counties require e-filing?

Three of Alabama's 67 counties require the business personal property return to arrive electronically: Mobile, Baldwin, and Tuscaloosa. The other 64 still take paper, and every county in the state has to accept an electronic return whether or not it insists on one.

  • Baldwin, Alabama

How Rendax helps

Enter each asset once, with the category it belongs to. The category carries Alabama's depreciation schedule, so the figures on the ADV-40 follow the asset instead of being retyped every October. Add the year's purchases, retire what you sold, and the return is the list.

Where the county requires electronic filing, Rendax submits through that county's electronic-filing channel rather than handing you a PDF to key in a second time. Where the county still takes paper, the same asset list prints a completed return.

Every filing stays in your account. When an assessor sends a change notice in the spring, open the return you filed in October, correct the asset, and generate the amendment from what you actually filed rather than from a blank form.

Frequently asked questions

When is Alabama's Business Personal Property filing deadline?

The return covers what you owned on October 1, and the county takes it between October 1 andDecember 31 of that year. December 31 is the deadline; the state sets a penalty for returns that come in late or not at all.

What counts as Business Personal Property?

Business Personal Property is the tangible equipment a business owns and uses: furniture, fixtures, machinery, computers, tools, and signage. Real estate is assessed separately, and inventory held for sale is not reported here.

Counties read the edges of that definition differently — leased equipment and items fully depreciated on your books are the usual questions — so ask the assessor when something is borderline.

Do I have to file if my equipment cost less than the exemption amount?

Alabama sets a de minimis threshold below which no return is required. The amount is set by the state and can change, so confirm the current figure with your county assessor before deciding to skip a filing. Not filing when a return is due carries a penalty; filing a short asset list does not.

Can Rendax file my return before October 2026?

No — Rendax isn't accepting live filings yet. We're building for the season that opens October 1, 2026. Join the waitlist to be notified when Rendax opens and to help us prioritize the first counties we cover.

What about Colorado?

Colorado's DS-056 arrives in Q1 2027 — the return covers property owned on January 1, and the state-wide form works for every county. If Colorado matters to you, tick it on the waitlist and we'll email when it opens.
