Frequently asked questions
- What if I file late?
Late returns carry a penalty set by the state — the county attaches it when the return arrives after December 31. Filing a short asset list on time is always better than filing a complete one late.
- What if I miss the deadline entirely?
A missed return usually means the assessor estimates the value themselves and bills you against that estimate. Filing a return, even a short one, is how you keep the valuation grounded in what you actually own.
- Does the deadline change by county?
The December 31 deadline is state-wide.Business Personal Propertyis a statute-level tax; counties administer it but do not extend the window.
